Gum Disease – Gingivitis

Most people are focused on keeping their teeth healthy and sparkling white. However, it’s important to remember that your gums play an essential role in your oral health as well. Your gum tissue acts as a foundation for your teeth, and when it becomes damaged or inflamed, it can lead to serious problems. Gum disease is a common condition that can cause bleeding, pain, and even tooth loss if it’s not treated properly. At Azalea Dental, we offer gum disease treatment as part of our comprehensive periodontic services. We’ll work with you to develop a treatment plan that’s tailored to your needs, and we’ll provide the support and guidance you need to get your gum health back on track.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue that can eventually lead to tooth loss. It is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Plaque attacks gum tissue and bone, causing them to break down. When gum disease is caught early, it can be treated successfully. However, if it is left untreated, it can progress to gingivitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Gingivitis results in inflammation and bleeding of the gums. If gingivitis is not treated, it can lead to periodontitis, a condition in which the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, creating pockets that become infected.

Gum Disease Symptoms

Gum inflammation

Gum inflammation is one of the earliest and most common symptoms of gum disease. The gums may become red, swollen, and tender, and may bleed easily. This can often be a sign of gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease.

Receding gums

As gum disease progresses, the gums may start to recede or pull away from the teeth. This can leave gaps between the teeth and the gums that are susceptible to infection. Additionally, the roots of the teeth may become exposed, which can lead to sensitivity and pain.

Loose teeth

As gum disease gets worse, the teeth may become loose or start to fall out. This is because the bone and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed by the infection. In severe cases, all of the teeth may need to be removed.

Bad breath

Bad breath (halitosis) is another common symptom of gum disease. This is because the bacteria that cause gum disease can release foul-smelling toxins that cause bad breath. Additionally, as the gums recede, more tooth surfaces are exposed which can also lead to bad breath.

Gum Therapy

Depending on your unique needs, our Azalea Dental professionals will create and carry out an appropriate treatment plan. In most cases, gum therapy will be needed in order to help improve the overall health of your mouth. Gum therapy can help to reduce gum inflammation, reduce gum bleeding, and increase the overall strength of your gums. It can also help to improve the appearance of your gums by making them look firmer and more toned.
